Raising Resilient Minds and Purposeful Lives

“Practical Skills. Resilient Minds. Purposeful Lives.”
Be Useful is a movement to raise a generation of resilient, confident, and mentally strong young people. In a world where anxiety, depression, and disconnection among youth are at record highs, our mission is urgent: to give children and families the timeless tools of usefulness – skills that build independence, motivation, and a deep sense of purpose.
We believe usefulness is the antidote to overwhelm. When children learn to contribute, create, and care for others, they develop confidence and a sense of purpose, which in turn helps protect their mental health. Not only does usefulness offer a sense of belonging, but it also cultivates resilience and inspires hope. Join us in empowering the next generation—get involved with Be Useful today.

Why Being Useful Matters
Youth mental health is in crisis. According to the CDC, 1 in 3 adolescents reports persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, the highest levels ever recorded. Rates of anxiety and depression have more than doubled in the past decade
Excessive screen time is replacing real skill-building. While the average child now spends 7–9 hours per day on screens, less than 15 minutes are devoted to unstructured outdoor play daily. How does this imbalance affect them? It erodes motivation, independence, and focus.
Practical skills protect mental health. Studies from the American Psychological Association show that children who engage in hands-on learning and family responsibility have lower rates of anxiety and higher self-esteem. Small daily tasks, such as cooking, organizing, and helping others, directly correlate with resilience and long-term well-being.
Building on these practical skills, community, and contributing to others, actively combat loneliness. Both volunteering and maintaining an outward focus have been shown to increase dopamine and oxytocin, also known as “connection hormones,” which reduce stress and create a lasting sense of purpose.
The future demands more than grades. Academic achievement alone is not enough. In an era of rapid AI growth and constant change, children who thrive will be those who are emotionally resilient, adaptable, and truly useful – capable of solving problems, managing themselves, and contributing meaningfully to others.
